Peugeot launches a completely new 508, a car that also undergoes a radical transformation during its generation change.
Where the previous 508 was put on the market as a typical sedan or station wagon, Peugeot calls this new 508 a five-door section. This is often a hip-sounding marketing term, but this new 508 seems to be applicable. The car does not only have a steeply sloping roof line, but also about stylistic doors!
This new form of the 508 placed on the EMP2 platform also dries even less than we are used to from the 508. With its length of 4.75 meters, the new 508 is smaller than its predecessor, and that is unique in a generation change. The car is eight inches shorter than the previous 508 and even the wheelbase decreases, albeit with only 2.4 centimeters. The overhangs on both the front and the back are kept short to emphasize the sportiness of the model. The new 508 is only 1.4 meters high, 6 centimeters lower than before. The only dimension in which the car grows is the width. With 1.84 meters, the Frenchman is 2 centimeters wider than his predecessor. The cW value is 0.26. Peugeot expressly says that the Audi A5 Sportback is the most important competitor for its newcomer. The 508 is on average 70 kilos lighter across the board than before. The lightest variant is the 130 hp 1.5 BlueHDi, which puts 1,415 kilos in the scale.
Its smaller dimensions have a positive effect on the turning circle. At 10.8 meters it is 1.5 meters shorter than in the previous 508. However, the luggage compartment, where you get access via a ‘hands free’ electric tailgate, with 487 liters smaller than that of the previous 508 (515 liters). ). With the back seat flat up to the roof, however, 1,537 liters of gear can be carried. The headroom must be both front and rear similar to those in the aforementioned A5 Sportback. In terms of width, however, the Peugeot has 5 centimeters of extra interior space to offer.
The design of the new 508 seems to be a combination of various study models, supplemented with a touch of history. For example, at the back and in the nose, with its vertically placed daytime running lights, we see features of the Instinct Concept. The overall shape of the interior is practically taken from the Exhalt Concept. The lion in the grille and the 508 emblem on the hood are a direct reference to the 504. Full-LED rear lights are standard. The windows in the stateless doors are also 1 mm thicker than usual, this to keep the sound insulation level.
In the interior we naturally find the i-Cockpit, as said a variant of it that is very similar to that of the Exhalt Concept. Peugeot also equips the car with a 10-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch head-up display. The instrument panel is completely digital. If you wish, you can equip the 508 with a glass panoramic roof that can also be opened. Optionally, Peugeot provides an induction loader.
Engines: petrol, diesel and plug-in!
The engine list contains a 1.6 PureTech petrol engine available in two versions. The first is a 180 hp and 250 Nm strong variant, the second is there with its 225 hp and 300 Nm above. Both blocks are connected to a achttrapsautomaat, where the 225 hp variant is reserved for the GT version. The GT version, like all petrol versions, also has standard Active Suspension Control, electronically controlled attenuation. For the 2.0 diesels it is optional. In addition to a fully-fledged GT version, Peugeot also comes with a GT Line flavor. The GT sprint, depending on the chosen driving mode, in 7.3 or 8.1 counts to a speed of 100 km / h.
On the international diesel list we also find a 130 hp and 300 Nm strong 1.5 BlueHDi that can be obtained with a manual six-speed gearbox or with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Above it are a 160 hp and a 180 hp 2.0 BlueHDi, which both deliver 400 Nm of torque. The latter two are always linked to a achttrapsautomaat. From the autumn of next year, the new 508 is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Of course Peugeot provides the 508 with a zipper new safety systems. The car has not only Night Vision, but also Active Safety Brake, Forward Collision Alert, Active Lane Departure Warning, fatigue detection, a high-beam assistant, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and Lane Positioning Assist. Full Park Assist and a 360-degree camera can also be found on the delivery list.
The new 508 will soon be built at PSA’s factory in Mulhouse, a production location that includes the 2008, DS 4, DS 7 Crossback (and until recently the C4). The outgoing 508 rolls, for example, in Rennes of the band. The international market introduction takes place in September. The prices will follow at a later stage.
